The road from Aultbea to Poolewe follows the coast and offers spectacular cliff top views of Loch Ewe.
Loch Ewe was, during the second world war a place of secrecy and was the loch in which the Russian convoys were assembled. All around the loch there still remains evidence of those times and at various places there are information plaques detailing the fascinating activities which took place. At the south western corner of the loch is the tiny village of Cove and, at a point over looking the entrance to the loch from the Atlantic, is the small but impressive memorial to the sailors who perished.
There is still a NATO refuelling station on Loch Ewe and naval ships can still be seen on the loch with the occasional military jet observing from above.
The Hardwood Cafe, situated just to east of the main road at Aultbea, sells gifts, many of which are home produced wood turned objects. The cafe itself has a large picture window looking down on Loch Ewe.
The road in front of the cafe soon turns into a track which leads to Fionn Loch, a walk of some 12 miles. There are a number of other walks of varying length around Loch Ewe including Firemore Beach with its ever changing patterns in the sand.
At the end of the road on the northern side of the loch is the hamlet of
Mellon Charles. It is here that Sleepy Hollow Smokehouse,
www.sleepyhollow-smokehouse.co.uk is situated.
Visitors are welcome, by arrangement, to purchase their smoked fish, which is also available at several local shops.
The Perfume Studio www.aromasciences.com makes and sells a variety of natural soaps and perfumes. This is open to visitors and also has a cafe with splendid views across the loch.
At the south eastern corner of the loch is Poolewe. In times gone by it was the most important settlement in the area since much of the merchandise arrived here by boat. There are a number of archeological remains in the area. The River Ewe passes under the bridge where salmon can still be seen and caught in the river beyond, but it is a rarer event than in the past. There is a small swimming pool here and also during the season a small, weekly market selling items mainly made or grown locally.
One of the finest and most photographed views in Wester Ross can be found by taking the main road out of Poolewe, towards Gairloch. After the road has climbed out of the village, on a right hand bend, is a parking area. Opposite this is a magnificent view of Loch Maree.
